See Orangutan Sumatra – Batu Katak Ecotourism is emerging as a hidden natural wonder in North Sumatra. While most tourists visit Bukit Lawang to see the Sumatran orangutan, Batu Katak offers something different and rare. In this quiet forest area, visitors can more easily find Rafflesia and Amorphophallus, two endemic plants of Sumatra.
Batu Katak Ecotourism is located in Bahorok District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra. The area sits next to the Gunung Leuser National Park (TNGL). This location makes Batu Katak attractive, especially for foreign tourists who seek untouched tropical nature.
Ecotourism features dense tropical forest and a clear-flowing river. The natural landscape remains well preserved. One of its strongest attractions is the presence of rare plants native to Sumatra, namely Rafflesia and Amorphophallus.
Rafflesia and Amorphophallus, often called corpse flowers, give Batu Katak a unique identity. These plants set the area apart from other tourist destinations in North Sumatra. Their presence adds strong ecological and educational value to the site.
According to Darma, a Batu Katak tour guide, both plants grow almost all year. However, their flowers bloom only at certain times. The plants are more commonly found during the rainy season.
“The plants grow throughout the year, but the flowers usually bloom between May and September,” Darma explained.
Darma also said that although the plants are always present, tourists need accurate information to see them blooming. Without knowing the right time, visitors may miss the rare moment when the flowers open.
In 2018, Darma and a group of university students conducted a forest study in the area. The research recorded more than 1,000 growth points of Amorphophallus. These included shoots, mature stems, and flowers in bloom.
Batu Katak Ecotourism is not only about rare plants. Sumatran orangutans are also often seen during forest trekking activities. This makes the experience richer for nature lovers.
Other activities in Batu Katak Ecotourism include river rafting along the Berkail River and cave exploration. Popular caves include Goa Air, Goa Bayak, Goa Jodoh, Goa Pupuk Mentar, Goa Batu Rijal, Goa Pintu Angin, and Goa Mbelin.
For visitors who enjoy outdoor adventure, camping, or quiet family time, Batu Katak Ecotourism is an ideal destination. The area offers fresh air, no pollution, and a peaceful natural atmosphere that is increasingly rare today.
